Summary:
The Editor/News Writer and Media Relations Liaison works as a part of the news and media relations team to promote the research and education initiatives at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
This position will collaborate with the news team to identify and write news stories highlighting research, education and community engagement for publication in various KU Medical Center outlets, including the KUMC.
edu website, magazine, newsletters, electronic newsletters and associated channels.
This position also will work with the Associate Director of News and Media Relations and other team members to support media relations activities, including interviews, press releases and pitches.
This position will assist with media tracking, compiling media lists and facilitating occasional in-person media relations activities onsite.
This position will review and edit copy produced by other members of the team, making note of grammar, AP Style and KU Medical Center style.
The position will work collaboratively with other members of the communications team to provide content for additional communication channels as needed.
Anticipated hiring range:
$54,000 - $58,000 Work location:
Hybrid schedule of remote and in-office work.

Qualifications Education:
Bachelor's degree or above in journalism, mass communications, strategic communications, or a relevant degree Work
Experience:
Three years' experience and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in news writing for various print, web and digital communication channels.
Two years' experience conducting media relations.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite Preferred Qualifications Work
Experience:
Experience in a position that requires extensive writing, such as a reporter, news writer, editor, university communicator or public relations professional Experience working in higher education communications, nonprofit communications or corporate communications Experience working in science communications Experience producing content for multiple channels Experience editing for a newspaper, magazine or online news channel Experience fulfilling interview requests and pitching story ideas to local and national media outlets Skills:

Job Duties Outlined Create content for various communications channels highlighting education, research and innovation throughout KU Medical Center, its three schools (Health Professions, Medicine and Nursing) and related institutes and centers.
Edit colleagues' content in a timely manner with an eye for grammar, style and readability.
In collaboration with the KU Medical Center Communications Department, support the university's comprehensive brand strategy.
Under the direction of the Associate Director of News and Media Relations, support a wide variety of media relations activities, including interviews with media, writing and distributing press releases or media advisories.
Assist with managing media when they are on campus.
Assist in crisis communications planning and execution.
Serve as liaison to KU Medical Center Communications resources, collaborating and supporting team members as needed.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Salary Compensation Statement:
The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking.
A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding.
At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
Pay Range:
$54,000.
00 - $80,000.
00 Minimum $54,000.
00 Midpoint $67,000.
00 Maximum $80,000.
